Keynote Address: The Future of DCS: Open Process Automation (OPA)

Ryan W Smeltzer
ExxonMobil

Companies across the world are on a quest to improve efficiency in manufacturing, improve sustainability of operations and increase productivity by transforming their operations through digitalization and movement to industry 4.0 initiatives. Many industrial plants have control systems and architectures that were designed decades ago and have not evolved to take advantage of the increased computing power and sophisticated algorithms that can improve productivity. Closed and proprietary control systems are an impediment to implementing digital transformation strategies. Recognizing the need for change, ExxonMobil along with a group of leading, global, industrial operating and technology companies formed an industry group called the Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF). The vision is to develop an open, standards-based, secure, and interoperable process automation architecture that is foundational for digital transformation and a stepping stone to autonomous operations. Like many companies, ExxonMobil is on a digital transformation journey….focused on leveraging rapidly advancing digital capabilities, data analytics and innovation to improve the performance of our people and physical assets in the areas of safety, reliability and profitability We have been actively working a broad portfolio of programs, both in the short-term and long-term to unlock our capabilities. In this session, I’ll share some perspectives on our digital transformation and how OPA provides greater optionality for meeting end-user automation needs. I will briefly discuss the stepwise de-risking of OPA that ExxonMobil has progressed leading to the initiation of a Field Trial project to implement an OPA system at an existing manufacturing facility.

Adoption of ISA/IEC 62443 into Malaysian Standards

Azmi Bin Hashim
PETRONAS

ISA/IEC 62443 family of standards provide consistent language and mature controls to manage cyber risk. They complement other security frameworks and standards, such as NIST (CSF, 800-53, 800-82), by addressing the technical and operational requirements of automation and control systems.

ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance (ISAGCA) is a cross-sector forum advocating for adoption of ISA/IEC 62443 as the automation control systems cybersecurity standard for consistently managing risk. Some members of ISA Malaysia are also members of the ISAGCA.

ISAGCA recognizes many critical infrastructure and commercial sectors depend on cyber-protected automation and control systems to achieve safe, efficient, and reliable operations. Hence ISAGCA aspires to designate and reference the ISA/IEC 62443 standard in country’s law and regulatory policy.

Members of ISA Malaysia approached Malaysian Communications And Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Department of Standards Malaysia in early 2021 to advocate adoption of ISA/IEC62443 into into Malaysian law and regulatory policy. This paper explores the journey in successfully convincing relevant authorities in Malaysian to adopt ISA/IEC 62443 as part of Malaysian Standards.

Electromagnet Monitoring Tool (EMMIT) for Monitoring and Predicting SOV Failure

Dr Ir M Zurix Mohamed
PETRONAS

Zulkarnain Mokhtar
PETRONAS

A study conducted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory showed that over 50% of the SOV failures in U.S. nuclear power plants were attributed to electromagnetic coil faults (e.g., coil opens and shorts circuit). In addition, the authors of this article are familiar with confidential supplier data showing the coil package to be one of the most replaced parts during the lifetime of fluid power systems. Failure of a solenoid valve to operate would have multiple impacts such as unplanned shutdown or increase in the operation and maintenance (O&M) cost. This paper will discuss a solution to predict the imminent failure of the SOV coil.

Anuar b M Isa
PETRONAS

Mohd Razzif b Farazan Ali
PETRONAS

5G technology is the most advanced cellular last-mile technology that has the superiority to deliver high bandwidth data speeds, ultra-low latency and massive network capacity. 5G usage will provide a remarkable technical leap advantages as compared to the 4G and Wi-Fi technology which are currently being deployed across PETRONAS. With 5G technology are readily available, all the current use cases and applications supported by 4G and Wi-Fi will be enhanced with better user experiences and future-proof infrastructures. 5G will even speed-up the adoption of IIoT which are crucial in supporting bigger digitalization agendas such as Digital Twin, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Whilst 5G technology are ready to be deployed, the lack of 5G use cases could potentially hamper the 5G deployment pace. The Oil and Gas end users are still looking for more use cases to be readily available in the market to justify the 5G technology deployment. While Oil and Gas companies may aim for its individual 5G site deployment, collaboration between oil and gas companies, technology solution providers, 5G chipmakers, telecommunication service providers, universities and related government agencies are keys in expediting 5G solutioning’s time to market. This would spur the development of 5G-enabled IIoT solutions and Use Cases. Our drive is for the technology to be deployed at faster pace to reap the benefit of 5G technology, upholding the digitally enabled operation aspirations and improve business performances.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission is part of the greenhouse contributor from offshore gas processing platform with high CO2 gas. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology is the technology utilize for CCS Offshore Project in Malaysia to reduce the CO2 vented to the atmosphere in support of Net Carbon Zero Emission 2050 (NCZE 2050) commitment. Monitoring, Measurement and Verification (MMV) plan consist of surface and subsurface instrumentation has been established to quantify and ensure the effectiveness of the CCS chain which consists of capture, transport and storage in achieving the NCZE 2050 objective. This paper will provide an overview of the selection of instrumentation to be installed at surface facilities and subsurface for the MMV plan. Consideration of space limitation, high pressure, material, high contaminant fluid and potential of CO2 phase behavior changes along the CCS chain need to be take into account during selection and engineering design, especially in flow meter and analyzer. Once the CO2 fluid has been injected into reservoir, subsurface instrumentation such as distributed multi-parameters fiber optics sensing system utilized to verify injector well integrity and monitoring the property changes in the CO2 injected reservoir. MMV plan is essential to demonstrate the security of CO2 storage and protecting the environment and human.

Standardization of Methane Emissions Management in Supporting PETRONAS NZCE Aspiration

Aidi Bin Wan Zakaria
PETRONAS

Greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range, causing the greenhouse effect. Rising concentrations of GHGs produce an increase in the average surface temperature of earth over time – producing changes in precipitation patterns, storm severity and sea level which commonly referred to climate change.

Methane gas is part of GHG (apart from CO2) that has a global warming potential of 25 times GWP (Global Warming Potential) compared to CO2. Based on IPCC analysis, the rate of global warming increases due to methane emissions. Methane emissions also affects advocacy on natural gas (NG) as low carbon fuel.

With the absence of local government policy/regulations and guidelines on methane emissions management to guide the local industries in managing the methane emissions, therefore there is the need for PETRONAS to step-up to ensure the quantification and reduction of methane emissions practices is streamline and able to support PETRONAS aspirations of Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030.
